With the Piz Val Gronda cable car to the Swiss-Austrian border

Ride to the top

The cabins of the Piz Val Gronda E5 cable car, which was built in 2013, majestically float above Ischgl’s snow-covered mountain world. The destination of their five-minute journey: the border between Austria and Switzerland, which runs right across the summit.

The two-cable aerial tramway was built with ecological concerns in mind, perfectly blending in with the landscape. Only two supporting towers and no cable trench were needed in the construction of the state-of-the-art cable car.

Our tip: The construction of slope No. 42 was particularly resource-conserving and required only minimal earthwork. Seize the chance to ski from Piz Val Gronda down to the Vesil valley!

For our planet

The new cable car between the Vesil valley and Piz Val Gronda was constructed with environmental concerns in mind. For instance, the power and data cables were integrated into the track cables, making cable trenches between the valley and mountain stations unnecessary.

What’s more, Piz Val Gronda cable car is only supported by two towers. The first one is about 90 meters high and located 462 metres away from the valley station. The second, 64-meter-high supporting tower is 388 metres away from the mountain station.

This special design makes the cable car functional as well as safe and environmentally friendly. Its innovative concept shows that technology and environmental protection can indeed go hand in hand.

Safety first

Maximum safety with Piz Val Gronda E5

Safe & comfortable

As with any cable car, safety concerns always come first at Piz Val Gronda E5 cable car. That’s why an emergency drive concept was developed during the planning of the impressive aerial tramway. In the event of a failure caused by technical defects or power outage, two independent emergency drives ensure that the cabins are safely brought back to the station. This practically precludes the necessity to evacuate passengers from the cabins.

By the way: Featuring eight avalanche towers, Piz Val Gronda cable car also boasts maximum avalanche safety standards. For even more fascinating information about the construction of the impressive aerial tramway, go to our construction blog!
